The AI Market Split in Two: Some Sell Ads Inside the Chat, Others Swore They Never Will

While everyone debates how to position themselves against artificial intelligence, inside the companies building that AI there's a philosophical fight that hasn't been resolved yet — and one that will affect all of us depending on how it ends.

The question is simple to ask and very hard to answer: should an AI chatbot show advertising inside its responses?

Two Opposite Paths

One group of companies, led by OpenAI and Google, pushed hard into conversational advertising. OpenAI launched a performance-focused ad manager using the same cost-per-click model that made Google worth trillions over twenty years. Google, meanwhile, has been pushing agentic shopping, where advertising and purchase recommendations blend inside a single response.

Another group, with Anthropic and Perplexity as the most visible examples, made the opposite decision: move away from advertising to protect user trust. The logic is that an assistant recommending something should serve your interests, not those of whoever paid to appear in the response.

Why This Isn't a Technical Detail

For twenty years, we all understood the rules of digital advertising. We knew a sponsored Google result was advertising — there was a line, more or less clear, between paid and earned.

When advertising enters a chatbot conversation, that line gets much blurrier. If you ask an AI what product to buy and the response is influenced by who paid for it, how would you know? Most users today don't even ask themselves that question.

Opportunity and Risk at the Same Time

If your strategy includes paid media, you'll have new ground to play on. OpenAI and Google are building the infrastructure for brands to appear in a paid capacity inside conversations with an AI assistant.

But if part of the market starts mixing organic recommendations with paid advertising, and another part stays deliberately ad-free, user trust in each assistant will start to diverge meaningfully. A user who knows Claude or Perplexity don't show ads may trust those recommendations more for important decisions.

Why This Makes GEO Work More Valuable Than Ever

If a significant part of the AI ecosystem is never going to sell advertising inside its responses, the only way to appear there is by genuinely being a trustworthy and relevant source on the topic.

There is no paid shortcut in those systems. This makes the foundational work even more valuable: clear semantic content, real institutional authority, consistency between what you say about your brand and what third parties say.

How to Think About Strategy With a Split Market

1. Don't put everything into one type of system. You'll need a paid media strategy for systems that allow it, and an organic authority strategy for those that don't.

2. Measure your presence in both types of platform separately. There's no point comparing your ChatGPT visibility — where you'll eventually be able to pay — with your Claude or Perplexity visibility, where only real authority will put you there.

3. Start now with the part that can't be bought. Paid ads you can turn on whenever you want. Organic authority takes time to build. The earlier you start, the more of an advantage you gain over competitors who haven't realized this yet.

At ROMA we always prioritize building real authority, because it's the only strategy that works across all systems — with or without advertising. Want to know how AI sees you today? Let's talk.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can you already pay to appear inside a ChatGPT response?

OpenAI launched a performance-focused ad manager, so the infrastructure is already in motion. The scope and specific rules are still being finalized.

Will Anthropic and Perplexity ever sell advertising?

Based on what they've communicated publicly, they chose to move away from advertising to protect user trust. That doesn't guarantee the position holds forever, but today it's a real and actively communicated difference.

How does this affect a small brand with no paid media budget?

It actually favors them in ad-free systems, where the only way to appear is with real authority — something that doesn't depend solely on having a large budget.

Does this change how ROMA works with clients?

It reinforces the approach we already use: we always prioritize building real authority over paid shortcuts, because it's the strategy that works across all systems, with or without advertising.
